This year marked the festival debut of the Jalatlaco organ as a playable instrument. One of our regular attendees commented on the evolution of this organ during his last three visits: first as an unrestored instrument (2002-2014) when we discussed our hopes for its restoration, then as a restoration in process by the Gerhard Grenzing Company (2016), and finally as a concert instrument (2018).

RELATED ACTIVITIES

  • February 19 –Exhibit “Pedro Nibra and Oaxaca Organ-building in the mid-Nineteenth century” to highlight the restoration in process of the organ in San Matías Jalatlaco, María Isabel Grañen Porrúa, director of the Francisco de Burgoa Library. Ricardo Rodys (Poland), curator, described the documents: payments to Nibra for the organ construction, records of later interventions in the organ, and construction contracts for other Oaxaca organs.

  • February 19 –Visit to the Jalatlaco church to view the organ restoration in process (Gerhard Grenzing Organ-building Company); presentation by restorers Eric González (Oaxaca) and Alberto Compiani (Mexico) about the recently finished restoration of the organ case, visit to the choir loft to view the empty case up close, and to a temporary shop space to observe the windchest, keyboard, and pipes removed from the organ. Organ builders Joaquín Lois (Spain) and Hal Gober (USA) were on hand to answer questions about organ construction and helped prepare the organs for the concerts.
