HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

Date of construction of the church: seventeenth century
Date of construction of the organ: 1726
Builder: unknown
Interventions: 1990, case restored by SEDUE (Secretaría de Desarrollo Urbano y Ecología); 1996-1997, the organ was restored by Órganos Históricos de México, Susan Tattershall, project director, and financed by Fomento Social Banamex and the community of Zautla
Inscriptions: a cross is inscribed on the largest pipe of the flautado and “17” and “26” are on either side; the pipes in each rank are numbered from 1 to 45.
Type: four foot organ on a table

DESCRIPTION OF THE ORGAN

Keyboard: made in 1998 with bone naturals and walnut sharps
Compass: 45 notes C1-c’’’ with a short octave
Key action: Pin (varilla) action, varillas fan out horizontally under the keyboard
Stop action: extensions of the sliders protrude from the sides of the case; registers divided middle c/c#

Measurements of the windchest: 0.93 m long x 0.38 m wide x 0.1 m high
Disposition of the pipes: chromatic
Vertical channelboards: 1- left hand of flautado mayor

Location of the bellows: on the table behind the organ

Wind pressure: 73 mm.
Pitch and temperament: a= 415, 1/4 comma meantone (restoration funding insufficient to lengthen the pipes and restore the original pitch of 392).
Case finish: polychromed and gilded

Measurements of the case: 3 m high x 1.6 m wide x 0.99 m deep
Location in the church: on the Gospel (left, north) side of the choir loft, which was built in 1999; previously the organ was below in the church on the Epistle (right) side of the main altar
State of conservation: very good; fumigated in 2004
